Every lab on the Full Health Panel — what it is, what it can help explain, and why we run it. Read this, and you'll walk in knowing more about your own bloodwork than most people ever get told.

Chapter One
Hormones
"Why do I feel like a different person week to week?"
"Why is my energy, drive, and recovery just… off?"
Estradiol (E2)
Your primary estrogen — the hormone behind glowing skin, stable moods, strong bones, and a regular cycleeven male bone and brain health. It rises and falls in patterns, and when the pattern shifts, you feel it before any test shows it.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: estradiol starts fluctuating in your late 30s — often a full decade before menopause. Tracking it now gives you a baseline your future self will thank you for.
Worth knowing: men need estradiol too — too low or too high both cause problems. It's one of the most overlooked labs in men's hormone health.
Progesterone Female
Estrogen's calming counterpart. It rises in the second half of your cycle and is your natural "exhale" — it supports deep sleep, eases anxiety, and balances estrogen's effects.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: progesterone is usually the first hormone to decline — often starting in your 30s — which is why sleep and PMS can worsen even when everything else looks "normal."
Testosterone, Total
The total amount of testosterone your body is producing. Yes — women make it too, and it matters enormously for drive, motivation, muscle tone, and confidence.The headline number — but only half the story without free T and SHBG below.

Worth knowing: a "normal" total can still feel terrible if most of it is bound up and unusable — which is exactly why we also run the next two labs.
Testosterone, Free
The unbound, active portion of your testosterone — the part your cells can actually use. This is the number that correlates with how you actually feel.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: two people can have the same total testosterone and wildly different free levels. Free T is where the answers usually live.
SHBG
Sex Hormone Binding Globulin — think of it as the taxi service for your hormones. It carries testosterone and estrogen through your blood, but hormones riding the taxi are "off duty." High SHBG = less usable hormone. Low SHBG can hint at insulin issues.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: SHBG is the decoder ring for your entire hormone panel — without it, testosterone and estrogen numbers are missing context.
DHEA-S
Made by your adrenal glands, DHEA-S is the "mother hormone" your body uses as raw material to build estrogen and testosterone. It's also a marker of adrenal reserve — how much your body has left in the tank.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: DHEA-S naturally peaks in your 20s and declines from there — knowing where you sit on that curve is powerful information.
FSH
Follicle Stimulating Hormone — a signal sent from your brain to your ovariesto the testes. When the brain has to "shout louder" (higher FSH), it's a clue about how the downstream glands are responding.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: rising FSH is one of the earliest measurable signs of perimenopause — often years before periods actually change.
Worth knowing: FSH helps show whether low T starts in the brain's signaling or in production — two very different conversations.
LH
Luteinizing Hormone — FSH's partner signal. It triggers ovulation and drives progesterone production.It's the direct order from your brain to produce testosterone. Reading FSH and LH together shows whether your brain and glands are communicating properly.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: an LH-to-FSH ratio that's out of proportion is one of the classic clues clinicians use when exploring PCOS.
Worth knowing: normal LH with low testosterone points to production; low LH points upstream to signaling. The pair tells the story.
Cortisol
Your primary stress hormone. Designed for short bursts — but modern life keeps it switched on. Chronically elevated (or depleted) cortisol touches everything: sleep, weight, immunity, mood, and every other hormone on this page.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: cortisol competes with progesterone for the same raw materials — chronic stress can literally steal from your other hormones.
IGF-1
Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 — the best window into your growth hormone activity. Growth hormone is your body's repair-and-recovery signal: muscle, skin, bone, deep sleep quality, and healthy aging all run through it.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: IGF-1 is a favorite in longevity medicine — it's one of the labs people optimizing healthspan track most closely.
PSA, Total Male
Prostate-Specific Antigen — the standard screening marker for prostate health. Establishing your personal baseline matters more than any single reading, because it's the trend over time that clinicians watch.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: guidelines generally support baseline PSA discussions starting in your 40s — earlier with family history. A baseline now makes every future test more meaningful.
Chapter Two
Thyroid
"I was told my thyroid is fine. I don't feel fine."
TSH
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone — the thermostat signal your brain sends to your thyroid. It's the standard screening test… and often the only one a routine physical runs.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: TSH is the thermostat — not the temperature. It can read "normal" while the actual hormones (T3, T4) tell a different story. That's why we never run it alone.
T4, Free
The storage form of thyroid hormone — what your thyroid actually produces and holds in reserve. Your body converts T4 into T3 as needed.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: normal T4 with low T3 suggests a conversion problem — something a TSH-only test will never catch.
T3, Free
The active thyroid hormone — the one that actually enters your cells and sets your metabolic rate, energy, temperature, and mental sharpness. If thyroid labs were a band, T3 is the lead singer.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: stress, dieting, and inflammation can all suppress T3 conversion — meaning you can feel deeply hypothyroid with a "perfect" TSH.
Thyroid Peroxidase Abs
TPO antibodies show whether your immune system is targeting your thyroid — the hallmark of Hashimoto's, the most common cause of an underactive thyroid.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: TPO antibodies can be elevated years before TSH ever moves — this is the early-warning lab standard checkups almost never include.
Thyroglobulin Abs
The second autoimmune thyroid marker. Some people are positive for this one and not TPO — running both closes the gap so autoimmune thyroid activity can't hide.

Worth knowing: five thyroid labs, one draw. This is the panel people usually have to fight for — we just… run it.
Chapter Three
Metabolic + Heart
"Why am I crashing at 3pm every single day?"
Insulin, Fasting
How hard your body is working to keep blood sugar normal. Rising insulin is the first domino in insulin resistance — glucose and A1c only move after insulin has been quietly climbing.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: fasting insulin can flag insulin resistance up to a decade before blood sugar looks abnormal — and it's one of the most commonly skipped labs in a standard physical.
Hemoglobin A1c
Your average blood sugar over the past ~3 months — no single-day fluctuations, no "I ate clean this week" effect. Just the honest average.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: an estimated 1 in 3 American adults has prediabetes — and most don't know. A1c is how you find out early, while it's still fully reversible.
Lipid Panel (5)
Your full cholesterol picture: total cholesterol, LDL ("delivery"), HDL ("cleanup"), triglycerides, and the ratios between them that actually predict risk.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: triglycerides respond to sugar and stress as much as fat — a high number is often a metabolic clue, not just a dietary one.
Homocysteine
An amino acid that, when elevated, irritates blood vessel walls — an independent marker for cardiovascular risk. Bonus: it also reveals how well your body is actually using B12 and folate.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: you can have "normal" B12 levels and still have high homocysteine — a sign your body isn't converting those vitamins into results.
CMP w/ GFR (19)
The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel — 19 markers covering your kidneys (including GFR, your kidney filtration score), liver enzymes, electrolytes, blood sugar, and protein status. The "how are your organs actually doing" panel.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: liver and kidney changes are usually silent early on — this panel is how they get caught while they're still just numbers, not symptoms.
Chapter Four
Inflammation
"I'm puffy, achy, and tired — and no one can tell me why."
CRP, hs
High-sensitivity C-Reactive Protein — a precision version of the standard inflammation test, able to detect the low-grade, chronic inflammation that regular CRP misses entirely. This quiet inflammation is linked to fatigue, bloat, skin flares, and long-term heart risk.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: hs-CRP is considered one of the strongest inflammatory predictors of cardiovascular events — and it's a $20 conversation most people never get to have.
Chapter Five
Iron + Blood
"Winded on the stairs. Dizzy standing up. Shedding hair in the shower."
"Winded on the stairs. Dizzy standing up. Just… drained."
Ferritin
Your iron storage — the savings account. You can drain your savings long before your checking account (hemoglobin) looks low, which means real symptoms with technically "normal" bloodwork.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: low ferritin is one of the most common — and most missed — causes of hair loss and fatigue in women. It's also one of the most fixable findings on this entire panel.
Iron Total
The iron currently circulating in your blood — the checking account to ferritin's savings. Together they show whether you're low, replete, or (also important) carrying too much.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: iron can be too high, not just too low — and high iron is silent until it isn't. Both directions matter.
CBC (10)
The Complete Blood Count — 10 markers covering your red blood cells (oxygen delivery), white blood cells (immune status), and platelets (clotting). The foundational "state of the blood" panel.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: even the size of your red blood cells is a clue — it helps distinguish iron-related fatigue from B12-related fatigue. Details matter.
Chapter Six
Key Vitamins
"Low mood, low focus, and catching everything going around."
Vitamin D, 25-OH
Technically a hormone, not a vitamin — with receptors in nearly every tissue in your body. It runs your immune system, mood, bone density, and even hormone production.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: at Chicagoland's latitude, your skin can barely make vitamin D from roughly October through March. Most of us are running low and have no idea.
Vitamin B12
Fuel for your nerves, brain, and red blood cells. Low B12 mimics everything from depression to thyroid issues — which is why it belongs on every serious fatigue workup.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: common medications — including acid reducers and metformin — quietly deplete B12 over time. If you take either, this lab is non-negotiable.
Folate
Vitamin B9 — B12's working partner in energy production, mood chemistry, and DNA repair. The two are read together; a deficiency in one changes how you interpret the other.
Can help explain
Worth knowing: paired with homocysteine (Chapter Three), folate shows not just your level — but whether your body is actually using it.
